Biden Gaffe Could Give Russia Green Light to Invade Ukraine

In a recent press conference, President Biden predicted Russia would invade Ukraine as tensions between the two countries continue to increase, and gave away how the U.S. would potentially respond.

The comments suggested that NATO members are unsure about how to respond if Moscow took action yet did not send troops across the border, something Biden called a “minor incursion.”

“I think what you’re going to see is that Russia will be held accountable if it invades,” he said. “And it depends on what it does. It’s one thing if it’s a minor incursion and then we end up having a fight about what to do and not do.”

This raised tensions even higher, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy writing on Twitter that there is no such thing as a minor incursion.

“We want to remind the great powers that there are no minor incursions and small nations. Just as there are no minor casualties and little grief from the loss of loved ones. I say this as the President of a great power,” Zelenskyy wrote

Following the conference, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki issued a statement in an attempt to do damage control on the president’s comments.

“If any Russian military forces move across the Ukrainian border, that’s a renewed invasion, and it will be met with a swift, severe, and united response from the United States and our allies.”

She also noted that aggression short of military action” such as cyberattacks and paramilitary hits “will be met with a decisive, reciprocal, and united response.”

The next day, Biden attempted to clean up his comments about a potential invasion.

“If any — any — assembled Russian units move across the Ukrainian border, that is an invasion,” Biden said, saying it would result in a “severe and coordinated economic response.”

“Let there be no doubt at all that if Putin makes this choice, Russia will pay a heavy price,” he added.
